Issue 61 – July 4, 2010
Happy Independence Day America!
While I don’t have any houses in this issue that specifically speak to American Independence, I would like to suggest that tiny houses may themselves becoming icons of freedom.

Tiny House on NPR
Last weekend a story came out on NPR about the tiny house movement and featured Peter King and my friend Derek “Deek” Diedricksen. Be sure to take a listen if you missed it. Below is the video of Peter King referenced in the NPR Story.
Lloyd House’s van conversion
Here’s peek at the interior of Lloyd House’s van conversion. The little stove you see in the lower left corner was made from an old propane tank and uses an old wok as a door. I spotted it on lloyd Kahn’s blog and suspect we’ll be seeing more in time. Looks like an amazing handcrafted van conversion.
Foam Dome Homes as a Roof
Craig has polished up his design concept of putting a foam dome roof on top of a shipping container structure. This hybrid structure would really maximize the strengths of both building techniques.
More sheds than households in UK says new report
I think this new report from Screwfix confirms my suspicion that tiny outbuildings are much more popular in the UK than America. It’s estimated that there are as many as 30 million outbuildings in Britain, which is more than the total number of households.
Shedworking on BBC Breakfast
Just to give you a peek inside the shed craze in the UK… the BBC recently covered the popularity of shedworking in a recent broadcast.
Introduction to Container Homes & Buildings
If you dream of building a home from shipping containers you might want to check out this new ebook by Alex Klein and Heather Levin. Also included in the ebook are 20 floor plans for shipping container homes.
Subtle Subterranean House
This house isn’t tiny but it is an interesting approach that could be downsized to provide an interesting underground tiny home. The view from inside would be virtually non-existant but it would provide incredible privacy.
Home in a Box
Imagine being able to place a single box filled with the essentials (bed, bath, kitchen) inside a larger open space making an inhabitable space habitable. This is an interesting design concept that packs all the function of a home into one big box.
