Issue 5 – May 6, 2009
Tiny House Living is a weekly newsletter that covers the world of Tiny Houses and the people that choose to live this simpler life. Each e-zine entry will be a short summary that links to the original article.
Subscribe by Email to Tiny House Living and stay up-to-date on the news and events in our community. You can also Follow us on Twitter.
Note: If you’re on the email list you might notice that only one article (the last article) was included. That’s because the free email system I’m using, Feedburner, sent the email before all the articles published. You’ll receive the remaining articles in an email one day late. I’ve adjusted the timing of the email delivery to prevent this from happening in the future.

New Tortoise Shell Design
Bill Kastrinos at Tortoise Shell Home is busy building a new design that’s built on a 26-foot trailer. It will include a full size bathroom, a kitchen, living area and a small bedroom. When complete it will be 208 square feet and cost between $26,000 and $30,000. Kent Griswold will be checking in with Bill regularly so be sure to visit Tiny House Blog to watch this tiny house construction progress. Read the original article on this new Tortoise Shell Home.
Video – Tiny Texas Houses
The folks at Tiny Texas Houses have put together a nice video that shows off many of the tiny houses they have built. These homes are a bit unusual in that they are constricted from many different reclaimed building materials that have been salvaged from older homes. These ‘antique’ materials actually give these houses a much more authentic feel than many of the tiny houses built from new materials. Watch the video at Coming Unmoored. Read a detailed article at Constructing a simpler life. Visit the Tiny Texas Houses website.
Nine Square Foot House Designs
I’ve been busy trying to imagine how a nine square foot house would work over at Tiny House Design. I’ve posted a couple of designs. One was a super streamlined wedge-shaped house and the other looks like a tiny cabin. I’ve been playing with the idea of adding a rainwater collection system and grey water reclaimation system to the requirements but both add weight and many people have pointed out that a house this small is a good candidate for being towed behind a bicycle. So I’m headed back to the drawing board to figure out how to make it light enough to be towed by a bike. Visit Tiny House Design for all the posts on Nine Tiny Feet or visit the Nine Tiny Feet project blog.
Narrowboats – Floating Tiny Houses in the UK
Not all tiny houses are spartan or sit on the ground. These narrowboats are designed to navigate narrow waterways in the UK. While the boats are often less than 7-feet they are very long. Not all are as luxurious as the one you see pictured here but many are real works of art. They tend to be steel hulled and usually have all the ammenities of a naormal home. For the complete article on these Narrowboats visit Tiny House Blog.
Next Generation House
This is a tiny house concept by Sou Fujimoto Architects. It’s designed for weekend use and is a cube 4x4x4 meters in size. The structure is built from cedar blocks held together by verticle metal cables that run through holes in the blocks. The interior is unlike any house you’ve ever seen. For the complete article visit LittleDiggs.
Earthbag Home Slide Show
The folks at natural homes are very clever at putting together new ways of viewing and exploring the world of tiny houses. This is an example of an earthbag slide show. Earthbag homes are home literally built from bags of dirt. The bags are stacked up in strait of curved walls. Domes and arches are also possible. Visit Earthbag Building Blog to learn more about building earthbag homes. Visit natrual homes to watch the earthbag home slide show.
The Good Human – The Six R’s Of Being Green
One of my newest favorite blogs is The Good Human. It’s filled with great advice and information on living simply, sustainably, and self-sufficiently. While is is not directly about tiny houses it is a great blog for those of us looking to simplify and improve our lives. This recent article caught my eye. The six R’s of being green are: RECYCLE, RECLAIM, REPROCESS, REUSE, REAP REWARDS, OR REDUCE. Read the complete article a The Good Human.
