Issue 34 – December 4, 2009
Tiny House Living is a weekly newsletter that is published every Friday morning. We cover the world of tiny houses and simple & sustainable living.
There are so many great stories lately that I’m having trouble getting them all posted here and on Tiny House Design. I’m posting the overflow stories to our Tiny House Design Facebook Page. You can also Follow us on Twitter and as always Subscribe by Email.

Winner of 2009 Shed Design Competition
The Open Office, designed by Kenny, won the 2009 shed design competition at Secrets of Shed Building. One of the key features of this garden office is a set of sliding wood panels mounted to a rail system on the exterior of the building. They serve to block sunlight as well as provide privacy when needed. Congratulations Kenny!
Katy’s Vardo
Katy Anderson and Dee Williams are launching a new tiny house business, The Portland Little House Construction Co. Both Katy and Dee have a lot of tiny house living and building experience and I suspect the homes they build will rival Tumbleweed Tiny Houses in quality but will have a style all of their own.
Tiny Solar House Plans
This past week I published a set of tiny house plans for tiny solar house. It’s a little 8′ by 12′ saltbox that can be built in multiple units so the owner builder can build a larger home (12×16, 12×24, 12×32, etc) from the same set of plans. The 40-page plans cost $9.99 and can be ordered online and downloaded to your computer.
Tidal Wave Proof Tiny House
OK… not really… well maybe… actually I bet this is tidal wave proof. It’s a tiny hotel accommodation currently in the Netherlands made from an oil rig escape pod. So on your next trip abroad be on the lookout for odd places to stay… you never know what kind of tiny little place you might find and how it might make your trip a little more interesting.
Dan’s Tiny House – Roof Update
Dan is building a house for his mom. He’s been making steady progress and the house is really coming together nicely. What is not nice is the weather… he’s been fighting storm after storm… but he’s doing a heroic job keeping the pace up in the face of this constant adversity.
You can now see the dormers he’s building and that the roof is almost closed in completely. I suspect that he’ll be weather-proofed soon.
The Great Escape Update
James and Kristen have moved into their tiny house but have been encountering tough milestones as they work to make their great escape. I really admire these folks and have been impressed with their strength as they overcome each challenge. I suspect the light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger and brighter for them and looking forward to seeing how their story develops once they are settled into their new tiny home and head out for Texas.
Jay’s Tiny House – Restart
Justin Peer began building his tiny house last spring/summer. But he ran into trouble with the used trailer he was using which caused him to put his project on hold. No after a break Justin is preparing to jump back in and start again with a longer custom built trailer.
Treehouses by Blue Forest
Here’s a post on Dornob with 20 whimsical treehouses designed and built by Blue Forest. Some of them are for kids, some for adults, and some are not exactly tiny but they are all definitely worth a look.
