Blankenship Success Story
This is a wonderful story about Keith and April Blankenship overcoming adversity. They have discovered that a life of simplicity in a tiny house was their path to a rewarding semi-retired life. It’s exciting to see people using their ingenuity and finding clever ways to realize their dreams. This is also a great example of how a leap of faith is also often required for finding a way to turn sour lemons into sweet lemonade.

Bureaucracy/Regulations & Small Living
The latest issue of the bi-weekly Small Living Journal is hot off the press and topic is Bureaucracy/Regulations & Small Living. One of the most common questions I hear from people looking to build their own tiny house centers around the building permit approval process. In this issue the authors explore options and how to work with and around the rules.
National Shed Week 2009
It’s National Shed Week in the UK and you follow the action at shedblog.co.uk. Among other things you’ll find interviews with sheddies from around the globe including a little contribution I made. The winner for Shed of the Year 2009 has not been announced yet but it should be any day now.
ProtoHaus
This is a model of a house currently under construction in Colorado by Ann Holley, an Alfred University graduate student. Alfred University is located in upstate New York and has a great graduate art program. The house has been built with sustainability in mind and will be off-the-grid and powered by wind and solar. Read more about it on Tiny House Blog, RowdyKittens, and the ProtoHaus Project website.
Greentainer – Shipping Container Homes
This is a clever way to reuse an old shipping container. The original wall panels have been cut out and replaced with windows. I suspect this would not work in all climates but is definitely in innovate way to break free of the metal box aesthetic most shipping container homes seem stuck with.
IC Green – Shipping Container Homes
IC Green is a company in California that is producing a range of great shipping container homes starting at 320 square feet. These shipping container homes have a modern aesthetic and feature green roofs, solar water heating and electricity and low flush toilets.
TreeLife
TreeLife, by The Cool Hunter, will be the world’s first major public exhibition of green treehouses. The event will begin at Hyde Park in Sydney in 2010 and then move onto London and New York. The show will focus on how sustainable architecture can co-exist with urban city life.
Tiny Prefab Geodesic Dome Home
Geodesic domes are an incedibly efficient way of enclosing space. The tiny prefab home pictured here is 160 square feet and made by Easy Domes Ltd. They sell kits and plans from 160 square feet to 1100 square feet. Dome homes are easy to build and tend to be low cost.
