A family treehouse becomes a cozy backyard overnight rental in Burlingame, California.
“The shape of this 100-year-old California coast live oak just begged to hold a tree house. Although it took a while to get the project started, the Studebaker family in Burlingame, California, worked together to build a special and soothing place. “Thinking back, I found motivation from a combination of just being a good dad and the opportunity to do something creative and highly original,” says Doug Studebaker. “Each of our three kids helped out from time to time, and in this way built up a little sweat equity and pride in the project.”Although the backyard tree house has served the family well, Linda and Doug Studebaker now rent it out to visitors.”
The folks at faircompanies.com visit an amazing grouping of treehouses.
“Emmanuel Grymonpré has invented a new style of treehouse. The shelters he’s built in trees overlooking the Spanish Pyrenees don’t rely on any ground support. Instead they’re suspended like birdcages over 20 feet in the air by simple cables.”

This is a design concept designed by Andrew Maynard intended to shelter environmental protestors during their demonstrations. I’m not sure too many environmental protestors have the budget to pay for such a rig, but it is definitely a cool tiny treehouse concept.

While this is a treehouse designed for kids, it’s a really inspiring design. I suspect it’s not completely practical with the translucent fiberglass cladding but the design was so well done I just had to share it with you. It was designed by Canadian designer Nicko Björn Elliott.
Here’s a post on Dornob with 20 whimsical treehouses designed and built by Blue Forest. Some of them are for kids, some for adults, and some are not exactly tiny but they are all definitely worth a look.
Dans mon arbre is a treehouse company in Grenoble, France. Each treehouse they build is one of a kind and designed for each individual tree and client. I was really impressed with all the different designs they’ve come up with so far and the high level of craftmanship. The treehouse pictured here is especially cool with shutters and awnings that open and close to help control the interior temperature. I first spotted this on Inhabitat.
Here’s another great treehouse from the Monday Morning Treehouse series on This Tiny House. It’s the treehouse of Don Botsford in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Don actually has two treehouses on his 20-acre property which he bought back in 1975 and turned into a nature preserve.
